New Technology Enhances Energy Management, Grid Resiliency, and Utility Efficiency

Honeywell and Verizon Business have announced a major advancement in smart metering technology, integrating Verizon 5G connectivity into Honeywell smart meters. This innovation enables utilities and consumers to remotely access critical data, manage energy usage efficiently, and improve grid operations.

The Verizon-connected smart meters leverage a secure cellular network to transmit real-time information on energy consumption, grid conditions, and equipment performance. This data integrates with platforms like Honeywell Forge Performance+ for Utilities, enhancing operational visibility and supporting energy demand forecasting.

“Secure, reliable connectivity in smart meters simplifies resource monitoring and utility equipment performance tracking,” said TJ Fox, Senior Vice President of Industrial IoT and Automotive at Verizon Business. “With massive changes in the energy sector, connected capabilities will be crucial for managing demand and reducing outages.”

Honeywell Smart Energy President Amol Motivala highlighted the role of AI, cloud computing, and 5G in revolutionizing energy distribution. “By leveraging these technologies, we are enabling real-time connectivity and shifting utilities toward autonomous management,” he stated.

Industry experts note that cellular-connected intelligence is becoming essential for grid efficiency and sustainability. “Cellular connectivity offers the security and reliability needed to monitor grid performance and manage energy distribution effectively,” said John Marcus, Senior Principal Analyst at GlobalData.

These smart meters also support remote upgrades, extending their lifespan and reducing maintenance costs. With IoT management capabilities through Verizon ThingSpace, utility companies gain a comprehensive view of their device networks, further optimizing performance.

As the energy landscape evolves, the collaboration between Honeywell and Verizon represents a significant step toward smarter, more resilient utilities.
