BEYOND HARDWARE: HOW BROTHER INDIA IS REINVENTING BUSINESS PRODUCTIVITY FOR THE AI ERA
Brother International India is transforming from a trusted hardware brand into an intelligent productivity partner by combining AI-driven innovation, MSME-focused solutions, sustainability, and customer-centric digital transformation.
Brother International has long been synonymous with dependable printing and imaging solutions, but in an era defined by AI, automation, digital workflows, and sustainability, reliability alone is no longer enough. As businesses demand smarter, connected technologies that enhance productivity rather than simply perform routine tasks, Brother is strategically transforming itself from a hardware manufacturer into an intelligent workflow and business productivity partner. Simultaneously, India's rapidly expanding MSME ecosystem presents an unprecedented opportunity for the company to deepen its presence through affordable digital transformation solutions, managed services, and a stronger partner network. At the same time, Brother is demonstrating that environmental stewardship need not come at the expense of profitability, embedding sustainability into product design, energy efficiency, and lifecycle management while maintaining the cost-effectiveness customers expect.

Edited Excerpts…
Q1. Brother has built its reputation on reliability and quality. In an era where businesses are increasingly prioritizing AI, automation, and digital workflows, how is Brother redefining its value proposition beyond hardware?
Reliability has always been the foundation of the Brother brand in India, but what our customers need from us has expanded well beyond the machine itself. Businesses today are not just buying a printer, they are looking for smarter, more predictable ways to manage their workflows, reduce downtime, and integrate print seamlessly into their broader digital environments. We have listened to that shift closely, and our response has been to evolve our entire value proposition accordingly.
That is why our focus has moved toward AI-driven personalization, predictive insights, and connected, cloud-enabled solutions that anticipate what a customer needs before they ask for it. We are building automation into everyday print and document workflows so businesses spend less time managing devices and more time on their actual work. Our mobile connect app, professional labeling solutions, and Managed Print Services all reflect this direction, and we continue to invest in making these capabilities more accessible across segments.
At Brother, we see ourselves less as a hardware company and more as a long-term productivity partner, one that combines dependable engineering with intelligent, experience-led solutions built for how Indian businesses actually work today. We believe that the trust we have earned through decades of reliability is the strongest foundation we could have for this next chapter.
"At Brother, we see ourselves less as a hardware company and more as a long-term productivity partner, combining dependable engineering with intelligent, experience-led solutions built for how Indian businesses actually work today."
— Alok Nigam, Managing Director, Brother International India
Q2. India's MSME sector is rapidly embracing digital transformation. What unique opportunities do you see for Brother in supporting this segment over the next five years?
India's MSME sector is one of the most dynamic growth stories we are witnessing today, and it is moving faster on digital adoption than most people give it credit for. From a small manufacturing unit in a tier-II city to a home-based entrepreneur, everyone now expects technology that is affordable, reliable, and easy to use without dedicated IT support. We see ourselves as uniquely placed to serve that expectation across our ink tank range, professional labeling solutions, and workflow integration capabilities.
Over the next five years, we see real opportunity in deepening our reach into these markets through an expanding dealer network, which we are scaling toward 10,000 partners by 2027. Managed print services and simplified after-sales support will also matter more as MSMEs look for predictable costs rather than one-time purchases. We are also investing in sector-specific engagement across education, logistics, healthcare, and retail, where MSME demand is growing rapidly and where our solutions offer clear, measurable value.
At Brother, our opportunity is not just to sell more devices, it is to become the printing and labeling partner that grows alongside India's MSMEs as they scale, formalize, and go digital. We take that responsibility seriously, and every part of our channel, service, and product strategy is being shaped with that long-term partnership in mind.
Q3. Sustainability is becoming a key differentiator for global brands. How is Brother International India balancing environmental responsibility with profitability and customer expectations?
Sustainability is not a side initiative for us, it is built into our global vision, At Your Side 2030, and into how we design products for the Indian market. We are seeing a real shift in how Indian businesses buy, with energy efficiency and product longevity increasingly becoming part of the procurement conversation rather than an afterthought. We welcome that shift, because it aligns exactly with the direction we have been moving in for several years.
Practically, this means we design devices that carry energy efficiency certifications, offer eco modes that reduce power and toner usage, and run consumable recycling programs that extend the life of what we put into the market. We work to deliver this without pushing costs onto the customer, because affordability and sustainability need to move together in a price-sensitive market like India. Every product decision we make goes through this lens, balancing environmental responsibility with the total cost of ownership our customers expect from us.
At Brother, we do not see sustainability and profitability as competing goals. We see durable, energy-efficient products as good business, because they lower our customers' running costs while reducing environmental impact, and that is a value proposition that resonates more strongly with Indian enterprises with every passing year.
Q4. The printing industry has undergone significant changes with hybrid work models and paperless initiatives. How has Brother adapted its product strategy to remain relevant in this evolving landscape?
Office printing used to mean one large centralized setup, but hybrid work has changed that completely. Teams are now split between home and office, and businesses need printing solutions that are flexible, mobile-friendly, and simple to set up wherever people happen to be working. We recognized this shift early and have been deliberately reshaping our product portfolio to reflect it, including launching 17 new printers designed with different kinds of users in mind, from compact home-office setups to high-volume distributed environments.
We have expanded our range of wireless-enabled printers alongside our Brother Mobile Connect app and cloud-enabled solutions, so employees can print securely from any device, in any location, without depending on a central IT team. Secure, cloud-based printing and Managed Print Services are becoming the norm rather than the exception, and we are investing in making sure our solutions lead that transition rather than react to it. Our professional labeling range similarly addresses the compliance and mobility needs of industries that have become more operationally distributed.
At Brother, our product strategy is built around the decentralized reality of modern work. We want printing to be reliable, secure, and effortless no matter where our customers happen to be sitting, and we are continuing to invest in the connectivity, software, and service infrastructure that makes that possible at scale.
Q5. As a leader, how do you foster innovation within your teams while maintaining the operational discipline expected from a Japanese multinational?
Brother is a Japanese company with a strong culture of discipline, precision, and long-term thinking, and we see that as a genuine strength rather than something to work around. It gives our teams a solid foundation to build on, and it sets a standard of quality and consistency that our customers and partners in India have come to rely on. We do not treat that heritage as a constraint; we treat it as a competitive advantage.
At the same time, we encourage our teams to bring an Indian entrepreneurial mindset to how we solve problems, to move quickly, experiment with ideas in the market, and stay close to what customers actually need on the ground. We use shared KPIs across sales, product, and marketing to ensure alignment while leaving room for local initiative. The balance comes from being disciplined about our processes while staying flexible about how we reach our goals, and from ensuring that our people feel real ownership over outcomes, not just instructions.
At Brother, innovation is not about departing from our global standards, it is about interpreting them with enough local context that our teams can genuinely lead rather than simply follow. We believe the best ideas emerge when discipline and curiosity are held together, and that is the culture we work to build every day.
Q6. Do you foresee Brother expanding its local manufacturing or R&D capabilities in India? What factors will influence that decision?
India is one of our most strategically important markets globally, and the decisions we make here are never short-term in nature. We think about what will position us best for the next decade, not just the next quarter.
Whether we expand into deeper local manufacturing or R&D capabilities in India will depend on factors such as the scale of demand, cost competitiveness, availability of skilled talent, the strength of the component ecosystem, and the overall policy environment that supports long-term investment. These are strategic decisions that are evaluated carefully as part of Brother's global growth plans, and India's expanding market, improving industrial infrastructure, and strong talent base make it an increasingly compelling opportunity.
As our business continues to grow in India, expanding our local footprint - including manufacturing and R&D - is an area we continue to evaluate with genuine intent. Our focus is on making long-term investments that strengthen our ability to serve customers more effectively while supporting sustainable business growth in the market.
Q7. If you were advising young professionals aspiring to become business leaders, what mindset or capability do you believe will matter most in the age of AI and rapid technological disruption?
If I were advising a young professional today, I would tell them that technical knowledge alone will not be enough, curiosity and adaptability will matter just as much, if not more. AI is changing how work gets done faster than any technology shift I have seen in my career, and the pace is only going to increase. The professionals who will do well are the ones who stay comfortable being uncomfortable, who keep learning new tools without waiting to be told to, and who never lose sight of the human problem beneath the technological solution.
Beyond adaptability, I would emphasize the importance of staying customer-centric and integrity-driven. As AI accelerates decision-making and reshapes roles, the fundamentally human capabilities, empathy, sound judgment, and the ability to build trust, will matter more, not less. We look for exactly that combination in our own teams at Brother, people who are disciplined enough to execute well and curious enough to keep evolving, because that is what delivering real value to customers actually requires.
At Brother, the values that have guided our growth, customer-centricity, innovation, and integrity, are the same values we believe will define great leadership in any era. My advice to young professionals would be this: stay grounded in purpose, stay open to change, and invest consistently in the relationships and credibility that no algorithm can replace.
