Toshiba’s Tomohiko Okada to Head India Business

Will take over from outgoing MD Kenji Urai to and lead the Group’s storage, social infrastructure and energy business in the country.

Toshiba Corporation Japan has appointed Tomohiko Okada as Managing Director at Toshiba India, a 100% subsidiary of the group. Okada will replace Kenji Urai, who has been committed to India success story and played an integral role in Toshiba’s growth and development in India. Under his leadership during the past six years, Toshiba’s India growth strategy has enhanced including the significant extension of the business portfolio, and expansion of their production capacity.

According to the press release, effective April 01, 2016, Okada will lead Toshiba India to the next level of growth across Group’s storage, social infrastructure, and energy businesses in the country. Okada has achieved remarkable milestones for Toshiba which include projects such as NTPC Korba Generator Transformers, UPRVUNL for 2X500 MW Anpara “B” project, Turbine/Generator island orders of NTPC 3X800 MW Kudgi, 2X660 MW Meja and 2X800 MW Daripalli project. Most recently, he played an instrumental role in winning the 1st ever full scope EPC project of 1X660 MW Harduaganj project.

A Toshiba veteran for over three decades and has been associated with India operations for 25 years. He first joined Toshiba Corporation in 1983, and since then has held a number of global senior management roles. His first association with India dates back to April 1989 where he was managed Group’s operations in Delhi for 5 years. Subsequently, from April 2010 to December 2013, he served as President, Toshiba Thermal and Hydro Power Systems Company. Post demerger of TTPS/TIPL in Toshiba JSW Power Systems India, another 100% subsidiary of the Toshiba Corporation, Okada has been responsible for development of Thermal Power business in India, said the release.

Urai, the erstwhile MD at Toshiba India said, “It was an enriching and a humbling ‘India experience’ for me. After heading India operations for over six years, I can confidently state that the stint in India remains the most memorable one. The diversity of people, their culture and the unique business opportunity and challenges that India posed is enormous and one of its kind.”

He further added, “Tomohiko Okada brings extensive experience in the Group’s Energy operations across market segments and geographies and has led several successful project acquisitions across global operations. I am confident that he will continue the strong growth momentum and lead Toshiba India to newer heights”
